40 days = 1 month +10 days
A time to reflect, to examine yourself, to intentionally draw closer to God. Many different denominations participate in the Lenten season. I grew up on Army bases around the world, the imposition of ashes was part of my growing up. I have sat through many Ash Wednesday services;United Methodist, Anglican and Catholic to name a few. Each one has left an impression and for that I am thankful.
This year I completed the United Methodist Basic Lay Servant Course. I had the opportunity to assist in the Ash Wednesday Service, to be on the other side of the rail was eye opening. I often do the object lesson ,so being up in front was not a huge deal. But seeing the light bulb for some of the people in the congregation was thought provoking. It seemed to connect to some of them more deeply than normal church, they were not as distracted and in my opinion that is a good thing.
Ash Wednesday begins almost a time of mourning, it is similar, I think to when a family member goes into hospice, there is a heaviness that sets into the church, we know the end is coming, this is the time of waiting.
If you knew you had 40 days to improve your relationship to God before you had to face him in person , what would you do?
Traditionally you give up something for Lent or take up something.
Easter morning is coming but for now.... How will you improve your relationship to God?
